In the second half of the 19th century, at the time of Imperialism, colonialism, and the rise of nationalism, the display of national identity becomes an ever more important issue for Western countries. In this context, how do Western countries that had an Islamic history in the Middle Age negotiate this Islamic past? This project aims to investigate the representation of national identity through the study of exhibition pavilions, in both national and international exhibitions, in historical contact zones (Spain, Portugal and Italy), and consider how Islamic art is perceived, recuperated, more or less integrated or excluded from the display of national identity.
